One of Joni Mitchell’s guitars from her ’79 and ’83 tours is going up for auction on November 7.
The Ibanez George Benson GB10 guitar has “Joni Mitchell” engraved at the 21st fret and comes with a letter signed by Mitchell stating that she did indeed play the guitar on the Shadows & Light and Refuge tours. It was one of six guitars she brought along with her on the road. In fact the hardshell metal case that comes with it is labeled “5″.
While recording her double album, Shadows & Light, in 1979, Mitchell played the brown sunburst alongside bassist Jaco Pastorius, lead guitarist Pat Metheny, saxophone player Michael Brecker and drummer Don Alias at the Santa Barbara County Bowl.
In 1983, Mitchell recorded Refuge of the Road after a successful jazz/pop/rock/folk tour with keyboardist Russell Ferrante (Yellowjackets), guitarist Michael Landau, bassist (and then-husband) Larry Klein and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta.
This prized piece of music memorabilia will be auctioned by Julien’s Live. The interior label is signed by George Benson (serial number D794944).
