Guitar Aficionado is pleased to premiere “Cascade,” a new song from Danny Black’s debut record, Adventure Soundtrack. The instrumental, guitar-only record is set for release on February 24, via Nettwerk Records.

Danny Black is an alias for Dan Schwartz, a member of the Philadelphia folk trio Good Old War. Black, who has spent the past several years on the road with Good Old War and is an outdoor enthusiast (he loves trail running, hiking and rock climbing), wanted to create an album to inspire listeners to go out and create their own adventures.

Recorded last winter in a sleepy NJ beach town, Adventure Soundtrack, weaves together a patchwork of acoustic, electric, and 12-string guitar, embracing folk, progressive, rock and blues. Inspired by a longtime passion for six-string virtuosos such as Leo Kottke, Tommy Emmanuel, and Robert Fripp of King Crimson, the album utilizes the guitar to conjure evocative imagery as expansive as the scenery Black loves to explore.

“ ‘Cascade’ is one of the last songs I recorded for Adventure Soundtrack but one of my favorites,” Black says of this song. “It’s a solo piece that’s really fun to play and has a few mood and time-signature shifts.

“I really enjoyed the challenge of making those changes happen seamlessly and take the listener to a new place before they realize it’s even happening. The feeling of the song is like a ride through the Pacific Northwest, where the weather and scenery can change dramatically right before your eyes. This live version was recorded in the back of our van where my wife, dog and I do all of our adventuring. I hope ‘Cascade’ puts everyone who listens to it in a daring mood and takes them on a journey of their own.”

Asked why he created an instrumental guitar record, Black replies, “I made a guitar album for no reason other than my love of the instrument. I’d never personally recorded anything but demos, so it was a really incredible feeling to make an album on my own. When people listen to it, I want it to enhance what they have going on. That’s the great thing about instrumental music. I’d love for them to create their own adventure to it and let it become part of their daily soundtrack.”
